The Discovery

There are certain discoveries in life that you never quite forget. I think Ollie had one today.

We have been home from the hospital for 2 days, and that means we go back in for a checkup at our pediatrician’s office (to weigh the baby and bags under our eyes, etc). We love our peds and especially love that they are open 7 days a week. This Sunday appointment slot is wonderful  because the place isn’t packed with sick kids and their germs or other people who might want to touch your new baby. But we opted for Sunday morning (again- fewer sick people) which also meant that we wouldn’t have  anyone to watch the boys (it’s against the law to find a babysitter and buy beer on Sunday mornings in our county). So, our new family of 5  squeezed into our anti-swagger wagon (which will soon be converted to full swagger) and headed to the office.

Thankfully they just let us come back and we went straight to our doctor’s office (he knew he would be there, so it really all worked out nicely)! They stripped poor baby girl and weighed her (only down an ounce from when we left the hospital) and our doc continued with the exam. Henry kept yelling, “THAT’S MY BABY”, but Ollie’s eyes were glued to the exam table.

All of a sudden, he yelled, “HER PEANUT * IS BROKEN!! MOM! DAD!! SOMETHING IS THE MATTER!!!” At this point, Ollie had one hand on HIS peanut to make sure the doctor wasn’t extracting them today. Jason took this opportunity between laughing and wiping tears to say that girls and boys are different and girls don’t have peanuts- that’s the major thing that MAKES them different.

Ollie was really beside himself. He even looked down in his pants again to make sure his was still there and he kept one good hand on his the rest of the visit.

The doc (a friend of ours) started in on some good jokes that he told me not to write and attribute to him. But there were a few that went, “and if you aren’t nice to your brother this is what happens”, etc. But he would never say that because he is a medical professional and probably some of your kids’ pediatrician.  *ahem* Enough political correctness, where was I?

Oh yes, broken peanut. So today was a big day for Ollie. I’m not quite sure he’ll ever be the same. He walked back to the car in a daze and mumbled a few times that Henry had a peanut and he was kind of in a stupor.

* I’m only writing “peanut” here because I don’t want to be on anyone’s spam lists. We use the correct terminology at our house and this is why. And that terminology made it MUCH funnier, by the way- an added benefit to the situation.

In other, non-peanut-related news, we are adjusting to life and doing pretty well. Baby girl is sleeping, eating and looking cute (her main goals in life right now).

Here’s a little bit of what we’ve been doing:

Everyone has taken turns holding the babyP7230101

This is actually Henry’s favorite thing to do and he asks to hold her all the time. Kind of like Lennie in Of Mice and Men, but let’s not think about that.

P7230132

And then they play This Little Piggy and she grunts at them. I’m pretty sure they’ll be pestering her for years to come. :)

P7230141

And, for full insider information, I HATE this camera. My old camera DIED (DIED, I TELL YOU!!) at the hospital. Can you think of crummier timing?

Thankfully, Melissa came to visit at the hospital and without me knowing, surprised us with a photo shoot! Isn’t that the nicest gift ever (especially to a mama whose camera bit the dust)?

Daddy and E

If you could possibly imagine anything that could go wrong in trying to take pictures of a newborn, it did. And somehow Melissa still got lovely pictures. She’s a miracle worker!

And the baby DOES have eyes (blue ones)… just not in any of these pictures.

Does anyone remember this stage of having a newborn?

I’m sure we will completely forget because I have forgotten the others.

I think there’s a time/ space continuum thing that goes on. Anyone else?

LOVE IT!! I will say though, Delaney wanted to hold Nicholas all the time when we first brought him home…. that lasted about a month. Now she’s back into that mode because he has started following her *everywhere* and holding him is the only way to tote him out of *her* room and back to mom!! Enjoy the lovey while it lasts!!

I remember that first “discovery” as well except mine was the other way around – girl viewing the boy goods right there on display for all the world. What a funny memory for you guys! The beginning of many more I am sure! I’m convinced that’s the real perk of being a parent of small children: you get to laugh at yourself and at them all the time, otherwise you’d never get through it right?! I wonder how people get through it at all without a sense of humor.
The baby looks just like Jason, but in a a beautiful soft sweet little girly way! Welcome to the world of pink and frills! Fun huh? Congrats to all!

Yes, Ruth Ann is only 19 months old and I’ve already deleted those early days from my memory bank! Being pregnant a second time I’m realizing I also have forgotten how tired pregnancy can make you, how much I love eating whatever I would like and as I look at the maternity clothes I use to wear I also seem to forgotten how very large I’m going to get! But I can’t wait to hold a tiny newborn in my arms again!

She is so beautiful! The peanut story totally cracked me up. Mine is 9 months old, so the memories are fading some, but I still remember those early days. When she was 5 days old she went on a breastfeeding binge and literally breastfed for 40 minutes out of every hour for 24 hours straight! Spam eating contest anyone? ;) Needless to say, she passed her weight check the next day with flying colors. Enjoy that precious baby girl!

@Heidi: totally a joke; but kinda real because my in-laws, etc, would be at church as would all our babysitters! That would just be a faux pas, not necessarily against a county ordinance. :) But the beer, she’s a law.

OMGoodness! That peanut story is hilarious. Hopefully the poor little guy isn’t scarred for life. Apparently, you’ve been really good about keeping doors closed and not getting caught with your pants down. I remember modesty being difficult when mine was that age.

Love the pics your friend took. They are perfect for your little angel.

Oh, my. Those pictures?! So stinking cute!!! (Guess I should have read your post before emailing and saying I wanted to see more pics. Oh, who am I kidding? I DO want to see more pics!!!) :)

I love your stories! You bring a smile to my day, and this one was just hillarious! My daughter is 15 months old and the newborn fog is fading, but I do remember waking up every 2 hours to nurse, until we went back at 2 weeks and she had doubled her birth weight… then no more alarm clocks for us!
On a separate note… we only have the one child, but we recently bought a buick enclave because we are still anti-swagger wagon, but just needed more room! We love it!!!! Might be an option.

Hillary! I lost you for a while…I guess I thought I was following you, but apparently I wasn’t in my reader. Throw in a few weeks of blogcation, and i lost track. So, I thought today…surely she must have had that baby by now…typed in your blog-dress BY HAND (the old fashioned way) and sure enough–SHE’S HERE!

Okay, so she is stinkin’ beautiful. Adorable. And your boys with her? Precious! I LOVE the photo of you showing her to them in the hospital. Perfect.

And now this story…the peanut story. It has made my day. I loved it… My first thought? Why didn’t I think to call it a peanut??? Then, you shared you don’t. But I still like it. :)

Congratulations! and hugs from Colorado! Enjoy and take pics cause you are right, you don’t remember. :)

Our little girl had the same realization when baby brother came home. She asked why his peaches poked out. We said that was how boy peaches looked. She quickly made the link from baby brother to daddy which made him turn red and leave the room.
    Your little girl is beautiful!

Belated Congrats, Hillary!!! That’s a beautiful little girl; now that DLG is starting the “talking” stage, it amazes me that she was ever that little and bunchy. Wait a minute— who am I kidding??? She was never that little; I had the 9 lb, 13 oz. “moose.”! And your “peanut” story sounds a lot like MLB’s reaction in the hospital last year, remember? My, my.

(When Lil’ E gets a few teeth we’ll sign her & DLG up for some serious competitions; we don’t call our little girl “Mooch” for nuthin’; today she added the word “cake” to her vocabulary, since she really liked the slice she had at lunch. Grandma gave her slice, since DLG had already taken the whole cake box down off the counter…..)(Maybe I shouldn’t be tell you these things about an 18-month-old…..)
